United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

Committee Overview

Topic 1: Minimizing the Gender Gap in Employment and the Workforce

Around the world, it is harder for women to become employed than men; statistics show that 72% of men worldwide are employed, while only 47% women are. When women are employed, they tend to hold less stable, lower-income jobs such as those in the household or in smaller businesses. Fully including women in the workforce is incredibly important for GDP growth and the continued advancement of global welfare, but many factors stand in the way.

Topic 2: Addressing Geopolitical Trade Fragmentation

Cooperation and diplomacy in trade is necessary for a healthy and profitable global market. However, trade fragmentation, or the division of economic activity, has become increasingly prevalent among political lines. As global tensions rise, governments are pushing for increased tariffs and prioritizing protectionism, leading to the disruption of economic ties and supply chains. Fragmentation’s effects are most felt in the food and manufacturing sectors, and lead disproportionately to income loss for developing economies.
