United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ)
Committee Overview
Topic 1: Combatting Online Exploitation of Minors
As technology and media continue to develop, so do digital platforms for child endangerment. Online predators exploit the availability of anonymous communication in order to harass, manipulate, and sexually abuse over 300 million children a year. Additionally, these activities are often underreported leading to repeat offenses. Due to lack of sufficient support, children are especially vulnerable to online abuse. Risk factors include unmonitored time spent on devices, absence of strong social support, seeking financial support from strangers, and insufficient guidance from adults in their lives regarding navigation of the media.
Topic 2: Addressing Piracy and Crime Overseas
The international exchange of goods plays an essential role in the modern economy, but armed robbery, hijacking, trafficking, and kidnapping continue to grow in abundance through maritime transportation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recorded data on 12 nations showing an 18% increase in items intercepted overseas, signifying the adaptability and persistence of maritime trafficking in times of disorder. Victims of piracy not only are the ones sustaining trauma and losing profit, but the ones behind bars. Surveys across prisons displayed that poor economic conditions and community pressure are major factors for taking part in piracy. Without the enforcement of international policies concerning maritime crime, the global community will continue to face struggles with economic stability, national security, and worker safety.
