Committee Overview
Topic 1: Recognizing Access to Clean Water as a Legal Right
The survival of every person depends on clean water access but 2.1 billion people worldwide do not have access to properly managed drinking water. The high number of 3.5 million annual deaths from water-related diseases proves the necessity for worldwide intervention. Political instability and weak government institutions and environmental conditions make it difficult for countries to preserve clean water resources. The world faces a crisis because industrial sectors handle waste and mining poorly which results in one quarter of households using water that cannot be used for drinking or sanitation. The United Nations established Sustainable Development Goal #6 to guarantee that everyone will have access to safe water management systems. The United Nations has acknowledged the problem but most countries show restricted advancement toward achieving their set targets.
Topic 2: Establishing Guidelines for Migration Caused by Climate Change
Climate disasters account for the displacement of about 20 million people annually, recorded by the United Nations. Worldwide, migration is triggered by rising sea levels, extended periods of dry spells and unpredictable weather. Migrants lack sufficient support from governments when searching for social and economic stability, increasing the difficulty of finding suitable shelter. Weak governments and insufficient resources prevent migrants from accessing the services they need including healthcare, housing, employment, and education.
